It is said that Caroline acquired the house for $1.00 in the divorce settlement. Other reports say she got the whole block for $1.00. It is a fact that the Tibbals owned the whole block at some point. Not much can be found about Caroline, although town records show she herself was a tavern owner..rather unusual for her times. The house has been a bed and breakfast establishment for several years. At one time it was known as the Inn Deering and then became the Chanticleer through three sets of innkeepers. The house became Jack's Jewel in 2006 and re-opened its doors to guests in 2007. The current innkeeper is Pamela Blevins..Jack and Jewel Harper's daughter.
It is to be hoped that the history and hospitality of the house will bring enjoyment along with rest and relaxation to those who enter the portals of this seaport house with its fantastic view of the waters where the Keystone/Port Townsend ferry and many sailboats are often seen catching the winds of adventure Captain and Caroline Tibbals knew in their day. |
